Book Review: I Named My Sister Silence by Manoj Rupda

I Named My Sister Silence by Manoj Rupda is a translation of Kaale Adhyaay first published in Hindi. This book was translated into English by Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar.

The cover of the book is very beautiful and gives full justice to the flow and theme of the story. The title completely matches the story and is just perfect for it.

The author has wonderfully framed all the characters which gives full justice to it’s emotional storyline set up in the backdrop of violence. This book is an emotional roller coaster journey of an Adivasi young man who is unaware of his goals and passion and lives his life with emotions.

Irma Kako is the step-sister of the main protagonist. She is seven years older than him. They share an amazing bond. They are more connected with each other than their parents. She is a strong girl who follows her heart and turns into a brave woman.

Captain Alok Datt is also a very emotional character. He is carrying the emotional trauma of past traumatic events that his family suffered before independence and during the India-Pakistan partition.

Yaya, the mother of the main protagonist, is a wicked and selfish lady. She hates Irma Koko and always speaks ill about her step-daughter and son relationship.

The unnamed main protagonist is the Adivasi boy who is nicknamed Chutroo by his sister. He is an educated and emotional being who is attracted to large objects. With the help and support of his sister, he came out of the village and is now struggling to settle himself among civilized people.

The book is divided into two parts: The Forest and The Ocean.

I Named My Sister Silence by Manoj Rupda describes the forest and ocean journey of the main protagonist guided by his emotions and passion.

This book focuses on violence and destruction as the prime motive. To describe it the author used a simple tone without forgetting the main motive.

Starting in Alang Gujarat but set in Basamura village in Bastar, moving to different countries. The author has described three different kinds of violence- economic, racial, and communal. The book describes the destruction and emotional trauma caused due to violence, greed, and the selfish motives of others.

The story flows smoothly describing the emotional struggles of humans. In good and bad times instead of focusing on the present our mind starts thinking of something very mundane or less important.

I Named My Sister Silence by Manoj Rupda is written in simple English which makes it easy to read and understand the main motive of the author.

This book is emotionally heavy but I enjoyed reading it. This book helped me to understand the various emotions of humans and after finishing now I am in a better state of mind to understand other people and respect their emotions.

This book shares the untold bond between brother and sister that remained intact despite the destruction that vanished the whole community. If you are looking for a book with a deep meaning then I will highly recommend you to read I Named My Sister Silence by Manoj Rupda.
