Book Review: Buildit by Albinder Singh Dhindsa

Buildit by Albinder Singh Dhindsa, is a roller coaster journey of the founders, Albinder and SK.

The one who started by delivering groceries and pharmacy products. With time, they switched to delivering thousands of products in less than a decade.

Author Albinder Dhindsa discusses how changes in thought processes and past negative experiences with individuals have influenced modern business practices. Initially, he found it hard to earn the trust of his workforce.

They had faced so many ups and downs in nine years, from pigeon poop problems to the COVID-19 outbreak. The only thing that kept them moving was their belief in their startup.

In the initial years, handling the workforce who were not desktop-friendly and upskilling them for their career growth was a huge challenge.

The pain mentioned by the author is from doing deliveries himself and tolerating the absence of their delivery partners, including the fire in their godowns. The way they tackle them and learn in the process is something that every startup founder needs to learn from Albinder Dhindsa and his partner SK.

By keeping their heads high in tough situations and helping enthusiastic people start businesses by making them their delivery partners, they have achieved more success. In this process, they care more about the customer after realizing how their ten-minute delivery is making people’s lives stress-free.

The yellow cover with a photo of the founder wearing a Blinkit T-shirt is beautiful. The book is written in simple English and flows smoothly, teaching business lessons to the reader.

Overall, it’s a great book depicting the journey of a company that not only grows but also helps locals to grow by doing business with them.

The journey from Grofers to Blinkit is honestly covered by sharing the real problems addressed by Albinder and his partner from 2011 to 2024. This book is a must-read for new founders and people working in startups. If you love reading non-fiction books, I highly recommend you read Buildit by Albinder Singh Dhindsa.

Book Summary: Buildit by Albinder Singh Dhindsa

Albinder Dhindsa joined college in Delhi in 2000. After completing his bachelor’s degree in 2004, he moved to America for higher studies. In Florida, he was amazed by the facilities, options, abundance, and disaster management.

On his second day, the university help desk recommended the Amazon website to foreign students for whatever they needed.

As per them, the website had millions of products and delivered as fast as the next day. Albinder was amazed, and after returning to his room, he browsed to the website.

After his first encounter with Amazon, he visited Walmart. He was again amazed by the variety of options they offer at a very affordable price.

His experience with Amazon and Walmart created a curiosity and appreciation for the founder.

He left New York in 2011 to work with his friend Deepinder Goyal, the founder of Zomato. After absorbing the sea of changes around him, he decided to start Grofers. During that time, Flipkart was six years old, and Amazon had just entered the Indian market.

Within the first five months, Grofers started delivering more than five hundred orders daily in Gurgaon, covering only three markets.

With more and more orders, the need for delivery partners arises, and dealing with unskilled people is getting difficult. The entry of Amazon into the Indian market also took away many of the delivery partners. With time, things started to work when the Gig system was introduced in India.

As the business started to grow, problems like handling cash, debt, and finance arose. At one point, pigeon poop became a problem.

How did Albinder and his partner solve all the obstacles?

How did Blinkit become a successful startup?

Why is this book a must-read for new startup founders?
