Book Review: Born in Grief by Shilpa Suraj

Born in Grief by Shilpa Suraj is book 1 in The Phoenix Series. This book is a rollercoaster journey of two people who have been the victims of abusive relationships. When the time came, they fought hard with their loved ones and the world for the injustice and came out as a stronger people.

The title of the book Born in Grief goes with the plot of the story. The author Shilpa Suraj has very well crafted the male and female protagonists of the story.

Dr Amay Aatre is the male protagonist of the story. He lives a monotonous and busy life. He loves his profession which keeps him away from the demons of the past. He is a physically and mentally strong male protagonist who has zero social life. He loves to be in the company of his two best friends from boarding school days whenever he has some free time.

Dhrithi Sahay is the female protagonist of the story. She is very strong both physically and emotionally. Dhrithi’s character evolves as the story progresses. The way she changed herself from being the victim of an abusive marriage to a woman who now wants to give a second chance to love and also wants to help fellow women who are suffering is very inspiring.

I love the friendship between Amay, Ishaan, and Virat. Their banters and fight for food are something we find very common in between friends. I love the way they stand with each other in happiness and tough times.

Grief is the central theme of the story. In this book, the author throws light on abusive marriage and the way it broke the women and children inside out. The book is written in simple English and the story flows smoothly at a fast pace.

The author had very well managed to create the suspense right from the start of the book and kept the readers hooked till the end. The climax was a bit disappointing. The story ended abruptly; I was expecting more secrets from Varun’s life to be exposed. Otherwise, this is a good book and a must-read for Shilpa Suraj book lovers.

Overall, I loved the story of Amay and Dhrithi. Now I am excited to read the story of Ishaan Adajania and Mayukhi Chatterjee. I believe more demons are buried in Crestwood which will surely wake up to turn the life of the threesome upside down in the second book.

This book is full of entertainment, fun, love, grief, and friendship. If you love reading contemporary romance novels then I will highly recommend you to read Born in Grief by Shilpa Suraj.

Dr. Amay Aatre is the chief of the Trauma Surgery department in a multinational hospital. He lives a very private and disciplined life and is anti-social by nature. Amay still carried the burden of the actions of his abusive father which took his mother away from him and a loveless childhood. He was somewhat content with his monotonous schedule unless a patient named Dhriti Sahay came to his hospital.

Amay saved her life but while doing so her healed bruises told him a story of her abusive marriage to Varun Gokhale. His accidental encounter with Dhrithi sends him down memory lane to Crestwood where he first met her. He remembers how she broke his heart to be with rich and spoiled Varun Gokhale.

While treating Dhrithi he discovered that it was her husband who tried to kill her. Unfortunately, Varun died in the accident and Dhrithi landed in hospital.
