Book Review: The Dead Know Nothing by Kishore Ram

The Dead Know Nothing by Kishore Ram is about a Thankachan who takes a vow to save the people of the Fatima island from losing their ancestral home. Through this story, the author sheds light on the lives of an impoverished fisherman community. The way the government and puissant exploit them for their benefit is the main highlight of the story.

The beautiful blue cover of the book matches the events of the story and complements the plot. This book is a piece of literary fiction written in simple English. The author has described the life of the island and the religious beliefs of the people that keep them together in every tough situation. He also shed light on environmental issues like the increasing plastic in marine water and the scarcity of drinking water faced by people living on the island.

The author, Kishore Ram, has beautifully crafted the tough male protagonist of the story, Thankachan. He wanted to become a church priest and wished to change people’s mentality about the Marakkans community. In his countless efforts, he faced lots of obstacles. Thankachan’s dream to become a priest failed because of a corrupt fellow student, and he was sent back from the seminary.

After failing the seminary exam, he joined a BA programme, but he failed the exams. People around him, including his family, always made him feel worthless. Initially, he seems like a worthless hero, but soon things change.

A man who was good for nothing turns into a hero for people who will save them from getting evacuated from the island.

Mathappan, one of the antagonists of the story, stood no less than a hero. Whatever he did was to marry off his sisters and to bear the expense of his younger brother Thankachan’s education. He bravely faced the pressure that society put on him as the eldest son of the family.

Bushra is a female protagonist of the story. She is a brave woman and always follows her heart. Although her role is short and people of the island have doubts about her loyalty because she is a married Muslim woman.

The story of the book The Dead Know Nothing by Kishore Ram flows smoothly, keeping the reader intrigued with suspense right from the start till the end. The funny dialogues made me laugh while reading this story.

The pure and innocent love of Thankachan for Bushra is heartwarming. The vivid description of the natural beauty of the island and human behaviour shows the thorough research done by the author before weaving this beautiful tale of love and betrayal. The story is filled with suspense that is no less than watching a fast-paced South Indian movie.

Overall, this is a well-crafted, compelling, emotional, inspirational and suspenseful thriller that is filled with romance and fun elements. If you love reading engaging, fast-paced, suspenseful thrillers, then I highly recommend reading The Dead Know Nothing by Kishore Ram.
