The Cipla Story is written by author Archita Mishra and is published in comic format by Amar Chitra Katha. The story is told from the point of view of Dadaji, a retired Cipla employee. The book discusses the vision of the founder, Dr. Khwaja, and the discoveries made by the team of scientists who not only made medicines available to Indian people but also globally, and at an affordable price.
The way the company brought reform in the health care sector in times of war and pandemic shows the compassion of the founder and its team, who always work hard to provide affordable medicines to people around the world.
I have used many of Cipla’s products, from medicines to skincare, and have known about it since my college days. Being a microbiology student, I knew about the company and some of its products. They are not only good but also affordable. While exploring this beautifully illustrated comic, I learned about the founder’s struggle to start India’s first pharma company to provide medicines at affordable rates. Dr. Khwaja’s legacy was carried forward by his two sons, who took Cipla to new heights.
The various discoveries made by the company, from daily medicines to the establishment of the first API manufacturing plant in India, followed by inhalers, also made affordable access to drugs and PPE kits for frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The book also gave me insight into palliative care and the training centre run by Cipla.
The book is written in simple English in a comic format that flows beautifully, sharing the 90 glorious years of Cipla since its humble inception in 1935. The book flows smoothly and sheds light on compassion and care in times of crisis, shown by the founder and his team.
This book is about new inventions, family dynamics, friendship, learning, and a positive work culture that brought reform in the healthcare sector. If you love reading comic books about legendary founders, then I highly recommend The Cipla Story.

Book Summary: The Cipla Story by Cipla
Dadaji received an invitation card for an alumni dinner from Cipla. The invitation brought excitement to the family, and everyone was happy, especially Adi and Ria. The children thought an alumni dinner would be a grown-up affair and that they would get bored.
To convince them, Dadaji shared the story of Cipla. The company was started by Dr. Kwaja Abdul in 1935. Earlier, no one wanted to invest in the company, but later a few investors got convinced and impressed with Dr. Khwaja’s vision. The company started in a small rented bungalow near Bombay Central station.
For the first few years, the company struggled a lot as doctors were reluctant to prescribe medicine made by a new company. With time, hard work started to pay off; even Gandhiji visited the company.
With time, the company also started sending medicine to other countries and saved the lives of many soldiers in the Myanmar war.
Later on, Dr. Kwaja’s sons, Y. K. Hamied and M. K. Hamied, joined the company.
