The Stolen Necklace by Shelvin Sebastian and V.K Thajudheen| Book Review

The Stolen Necklace by Shelvin Sebastian and V.K. Thajudheen is an eye-opening book based on the real story of a respected Muslim man from Kerala. This book is about an innocent man’s fight against corrupt government officials. This book review is powered by the Blogchatter book review program.

Thajudheen is a middle-class Muslim man from Kerala who had a business in Qatar. He was arrested by SI Bijju for a crime that he had never committed. When his family tried for bail the court sent him for 14 days in jail.

The author has described his days in jail in detail like jail food that tastes like flour, and playing board games with inmates. In jail, his old memories came flooding like his trip to Mumbai, his interaction with political people in the past, his childhood memories, and the way he met his sweetheart.

The memories of Thajudheen during his jail were explained in so much detail. Some of them were very interesting but a few of them I found a little boring. I believe this is because I have little idea about the political history of Kerala.

Thajudheen accepted his flaws in the book like his smoking habit or his short temper nature which is something that touched my heart.

Thajudheen lost 25g weight during his stay in jail. He lost his health, wealth, and respect just because of the lack of investigation done by the police. It seems the police just want to solve the case fairly or unfairly.

I have all the love and respect for Shiraz the son-in-law of Thajudheen who supported him till the end. His son Thezin ran day and night to take his father out of jail as soon as possible and also lost a year of college.

His seven-year-old son Thezeen was also bullied in the school and went through emotional trauma because of the police’s behavior. In short, a whole family suffers because of the false allegations of one egoistic police officer and his colleagues. His wife Naseerena was the one person who acted as a strong pillar till the case was solved.

Thajudheen received lots of support from his family, community, local political leaders, social media, and friends.

Sub-inspector Biju is one person who falsely frames Thajudheen in the case just to save his nose. I believe he and his colleagues know from the day he arrested Thajudheen that he is innocent but it is his false ego that drives him to arrest the innocent one.

Biju spread rumors about the confession of the crime. He also tried to frame him in other cases to increase Thajudheen’s stay in jail.

Despite all this Biju received lots of support from his friends, colleagues, community, and on social media. Sometimes there is a difference between what we see on social media and reality.

The author has used simple language and the book flows smoothly covering every detail of the case. Apart from this case, other cases of false arrests done by the police in India and around the world just for the knowledge of the readers were also explained in short. The author has also given the address of the various social media posts done by Thazudheen’s supporters at that time.

The Stolen Necklace by Shelvin Sebastian and V.K. Thajudheen book gives hope that every time wrong people can’t win. Maybe luck will support them for a while. I believe the author took a brave step by turning his true story into a book. This book gives hope that in the end luck and law both support the innocent ones. The author has wonderfully written the sentiments of Thajudheen and his family.

I believe the author has done a great job by turning the jail journey of an innocent Muslim man into a book. I know it will not completely change the way government officials work but it will definitely contribute to improving the system. If you like to read books based on true stories then I would highly recommend you to read The Stolen Necklace by Shelvin Sebastian and V.K. Thajudheen.

The Stolen Necklace by Shelvin Sebastian and V.K Thajudheen| Book Summary

“They don’t know me. I don’t know them. Yet they have already concluded I am a lawbreaker. This is how the police destroy a reputation.”

In the book, The Stolen Necklace written by Shelvin Sebastian and V.K. Thajudheen is a resident of Thalassery, Kerala. He had a business in Qatar. He returns to Kerala for the marriage of her elder daughter Thazleena. The day his daughter got married to Shiraz Abdullah a 28 years old descent man, he was more than happy and felt grateful to God.

After two days of marriage, his sister Shameema invited his family for dinner. Thajudheen went there early with his wife Nasreena, and his two sons Thezin and Thazeen in a rented car. The newly wedded couple Thazleena and Shiraz joined them later for the dinner.

While returning the police stopped their car. Initially, police asked for some help as the wheel of their jeep had fallen into a rut. When Thezin and his friend were helping the police, Biju started claiming Thajudheen as the thief of a stolen necklace. They showed a CCTV image of the thief who looks like him.

Police also forced him to pay for the necklace to finish this matter. To that Thajudheen and his wife refused to do as he is not the thief and when the necklace was stolen he was busy in the preparations of the wedding.

When they refuse to pay for the necklace, police arrest Thajudheen and bring him to Chakkarakkal Police Station. After spending a night in the police station the next day Sub Inspector Biju and his colleagues insulted him and again forced him to pay for the necklace. When again Thajudheen refused to do so, Biju slapped him badly.

When Thajudheen was presented in court the judge sent him to 14 days custody. In the jail, he met various criminals like people involved in making bombs, political workers involved in brawls, robbers, and many more. Since then more than 50 days have passed and he is still in jail.

Does Thajudheen get bail from jail?

Do police get success in catching the real thief?

To know more about Thajudheen read the book The Stolen Necklace by Shelvin Sebastian and V.K. Thajudheen.
