Book Summary: Skill with People by Les Giblin
Author Les Giblin in the book Skill with people describes the basic principles of mastering communication skills. All the principles described in the book are very simple and most of us are aware of them.
My Learnings
- The best way to deal with people is to understand their nature. When you succeed in understanding people’s nature, you will get a clear idea about their behavior. Les Giblin gives a very practical suggestion that one should remember while trying to understand another person’s nature.
“Understanding people and human nature simply involves recognizing people for what they are; not what you think they are, nor what you want them to be.”
- When you communicate with other people, talk to them about themselves instead of yourself. When you talk with others about themselves, they will be happier and more satisfied.
- To develop human relations, try to make other people feel important. Everyone wants respect and when you ignore them they will feel bad.
- To become skillful with human nature, learn the Art of Being Agreeable. As suggested by Les Giblin in the book Skill with People,
“As long as you live, never forget that any fool can disagree with people. It takes a wise person, a shrewd person, a big person, to agree-particularly when the other person is wrong.”
- To influence other people skillfully first try to find out what he or she exactly wants from you or with life and then behave accordingly.
- To convince other people, use the third person’s point of view. For eg. If you are in a job interview and your future employer wonders about your work ethic. You can tell them how satisfied your past employer was with you.
- You must learn to critique people skillfully and always end the criticism on a friendly note.
- If you are grateful to other people and want them to show up next time then thank them with full sincerity.
- If you want other people to admire and respect you then present yourself with pride and respect.

The author has described everything in a very easy way without using any complex vocabulary. He also suggested many formulas for mastering communication skills. The happiness formula is one that I loved the most

- The same happiness formula applies to you! ·
- When you see the joy, gratitude, and pleasure that you bring to others’ lives, you will feel happier and more satisfied. As we all know there is more joy in giving than in receiving!
