The Unexpected Gulab Jamun by Venuka Goyal is a perfect combination of love, food, health, and career.
The yummy title of the book caught my attention when I was browsing my e-reader to find my next read. The cover and title of the book The Unexpected Gulab Jamun by Venuka Goyal give full justice to the storyline.
The author has wonderfully framed all the characters of the book that represent current-day millennials.
I love the character of Kavita who is educated, career-oriented, beautiful, hates cooking, and loves having gulab jamun with vanilla ice cream for desserts. She is close to her parents and dreaded the thought of leaving them. I find the character of Kavita very inspiring who gives importance to her career and parents while looking for an ideal life partner.
Her character is a mirror image of modern women who give importance to their careers and always want to stay near their parents.
The character of Amit is also very inspiring and the way he took care of his health is really very motivating. I believe he is the best boyfriend who takes care of Kavita’s health and moods. His character gives a glimpse of most modern-day men who give importance to their partner’s choice and take care of their health.
The characters of Rahul, Tanya, and Riya are just like most millennials whom we can find in most metro cities.
The story takes place in Mumbai and the author has wonderfully given a glimpse of life in Mumbai by mentioning Mumbai rain and the way it changes the daily routine and moods of the people living there.
After reading this book I too have learned that women should not always compromise on their careers and there is nothing wrong in being a little selfish about themselves.
The sweet gulab jamun has been mentioned so many times that in the evening I too brought gulab jamun from the local shop and enjoyed it with my family.
The author had wonderfully blended love and food to make it a tasty story. The story flows at a butter-smooth pace and gives a taste of the problems and behavior of current-day millennials. Different twists and turns and healthy recipes kept me entertained while reading this simple love story.
The author has used very simple language so that anyone can finish this book in one go. This is a good book and you can enjoy reading it on a dull afternoon.

Kavita is an educated working girl who hails from Indore, lives in Mumbai, and loves eating gulab jamun with vanilla ice cream for desserts. One day while attending the house party of a college friend she bumps into her college mate Amit. Like her, he is also living in Mumbai and working in a multinational company.
Within a few dates, they started to love each other. For Amit, she is her dream girl whom he wants to be from the first day of college, and for Kavita, he is one person who understands her and takes care of her.
Amit goes to Banglore for a few weeks for some professional training and this side Kavita’s mother starts sending her profiles of prospective grooms. Kavita starts rejecting them by giving one or the other excuse. When her mother sends him Rahul’s profile, she can’t reject it because as per her checklist for the perfect groom, he gets all the tick.
She went to meet Rahul because she doesn’t have an excuse. On their first meeting, she discovers that they had many things in common, and like Amit, he too is perfect for her. On this side when Amit returns from Bangalore, he proposed to Kavita and told him he had been promoted to an office based in the USA. Being the only child and having a perfect job in Mumbai, she does not want to shift to the USA.
After the proposal, they separated from each other on a very bad note. As the days passed confusion between the two started increasing and things got worse. On this side, Kavita started thinking about giving a chance to Rahul. When her mother forced her to meet him for the second time. Unfortunately, Amit caught her red-handed as he too was roaming in the same area with his colleagues.
