Wonder Womaniya by Dr. Sohil Makwana is a wonderful book featuring wonder woman Ambika Chamar who is a memes, munnas, and momos lover.

Ambika is the lovely daughter of Kanaiyalal.J.Chamar and Daya. Kanaiyalal is a shoemaker and Daya is a housewife. Both live happily in the historical city of Jhansi with their witty daughter.

Kanaiyalal is full of energy, and love, and is blessed with an amazing sense of humor. He has transferred all his humor genes to Ambika. These humor genes illuminate her personality and make all the people around her happy.

Janaki Sinha is Ambika’s best friend. Both were born on the same day in the same hospital and are happy-go-lucky girls. Both studied in the same college and were working in the same government hospital in Jhansi. Janki is also one of the most important persons in Ambika’s life who supported her equally in her happiness and sorrows.

Ambika met her better half Amar Pandit for the first time at her best friend Janaki’s wedding. Amar falls for Ambika the minute he sees her. It was love at first sight for Amar Pandit.

Sushma, his mother, was against this relationship as Ambika belonged to a lower caste. Amar’s father Jayshankar supported him. Amar worked hard to convince Ambika and Sushma to get married.

Finally, Ambika agreed to marry Amar. Things were good initially between them, but when Ambika failed to conceive after trying hard for one full year things started changing track. With each passing day, Amar’s behavior was changing towards her.

Quotes

Wonder Womaniya by Dr. Sohil Makwana is full of lots of wonderful dialogue. In most of them, humor and sarcasm flow together explaining the reality of life. A few of my favorite ones are

Waah! Facebook pe Krishnaleela and TV pe Splittsvilla? Sharm nahi aati?”

“Kumbhakaran ke baad agar koi ache se soya hai, to wo hai meri kismet!”

“I’m sunshine mixed with little hurricane”

“Guzare huve palo mein rahogi toh jald hi guzar jaogi”

“Life is like photography, Ambika. You need the negatives to develop.”

“Yahi ki kisike andar itna bhi mat doobo ki tum khud hi toot jao”

Book Review: Wonder Womaniya by Dr. Sohil Makwana

Wonder Womaniya by Dr. Sohil Makwana begins with a stand-up comedy show. If you are not good at Hindi then I believe most of the things will go above your head. This book is written keeping Indian readers in mind.

I loved the amazing Hindi funny talks that happened between Kanaiyalal and Daya, the funny parents of Ambika.

Ambika is an educated girl with a lovely sense of humor. Her personality is full of energy and she is also famous on Instagram due to the funny meme she made. She has the power to make people laugh around her all the time.

Even being educated she has to face lots of problems in her married life. Her mother-in-law Sushma treats her badly as she is a chamar.

Her husband’s behavior towards her changed drastically as she failed to conceive. When the reports about Ambika’s biological issues came to light, without knowing the full truth Amar left her crying on the road and never accepted her again in his life.

Amar was a typical Indian man, I believe this type of orthodox behavior still exists in Indian society. Men like Amar expect only two things from their wives, number one is to do all the household chores, and the second, the most important is to give birth to their children.

The way Sushma behaves with Ambika shows how still upper caste people treat the lower caste people in India. Things get worse if you are a girl from a lower caste married in a Brahmin family.

The book also explains lots of medical things in a little more detail as the author himself is a doctor. Being a biology student, I find the medical details in the book quite interesting and it didn’t go above my head. But, if you are not from a science background or a science subject lover you will find these details in the book a little boring.

This is the best book to read on a lazy afternoon. As the book is written in easy English language with a heavy tadka of Hindi, and garnished with lots of sarcasm and humor to add flavors to the story. I finished it in one sitting as I was in no mood to keep it down, and Ambika’s life story kept me hooked till the end.

Conclusion

Wonder Womaniya by Dr. Sohil Makwana is one book that focuses on the plight of women in India. The book is comic and compelling both at the same time, that is how she motivates millions of people despite suffering from a rare disease. The problems and issues that Ambika faces in her life are no different from what most women suffer in India and many countries around the world.
