Book Review: The Zamindar’s Ghost by Khayaal Patel
The Zamindar’s Ghost by Khayaal Patel is a horror mystery book that takes you to the times before independence when the Zamindari system was prevailing in India. The story describes the beauty of the Ooty, Zamindari system, the English Government, and their influence on the Indians.
I love the cover of the book. It has all the Indian horror novel vibes. I believe the cover of the book gives a glimpse of one of the main characters of the story. While reading this book I felt like I was watching some old horror Indian movie.
The author has wonderfully framed all the characters and they all have good and bad sides like real humans. There are many characters in the book who kept the story alive by revealing their colorful sides from time to time.
Shravani Mehra is the fifty years old respected teacher who is loved by few and hated by many people. She is born out of her mother’s affair with some Englishman who runs away after seducing her mother with his charm. Although she is an Indian but looks more like an Englishwoman because of her father’s genes. She had many short-lived affairs during her youth but at fifty she is still single. She loved the town, the people, and the new Zamindar Arjun Rana wholeheartedly.
Shravani is the one character who gets evolved in the story. From a strict matron, she turned into a loving and caring caretaker of the orphanage. Leaving her flings and affairs behind, all she had in mind is the growth and progress of the children of the orphanage. She is the most powerful character in the story, embracing her flaws and colorful side with dignity.
Ishita Dhiman is the new matron of the orphanage and a student of Shravani. She seems like the mirror image of Shravani. She loves the children of the orphanage and has been the best friend of New Zamindar and his wife since childhood.
Arjun Rana is the new Zamindar, who went missing for six years. Unlike his father, he is loving, caring, and a total coward. Although he is close to Shravani Mehra and his chemistry with his wife Archana remains a mystery for me till the end. I wish the author had given a few more details about Archana and Arjun’s relationship.
Tej Bahadur is the head constable and is doing the investigation of murders. I love his bitter-and-sweet bonding with Shravani Mehra in the story. He is one character who always follows his heart and never loses his dignity till the end.
Stephan the owner of Aneri Plume Hotel and Eric Matheson the gardener were two characters that give negative vibes and are disrespected by the people of Ooty.
Zamindar’s ghost is one character that remains a complete mystery to me till the end. Sometimes I felt that there is no ghost in the story, someone is faking it to create terror and fear in the town for his or her benefit. Other times I felt like The Zamindar’s Ghost is real and Azad Manor is a haunted place.
Initially, the story took some time to pick up, but after a few chapters, more and more suspense was created which remained intact till the end. The story flows at a butter-smooth pace and keeps the reader invested in it, with new twists and turns from time to time. The end was unexpected to me, the culprit was really smart and maintained the suspense till the end.
As the story took place before independence I can see a lot of English culture and etiquette in the story. I enjoyed this book. Thank you Blogchatter for sending me an amazing book. This book review is powered by the Blogchatter book review program.
