Book Review: Nandi’s Charge: The Battle of Vathapi by Arun Krishnan

Nandi’s Charge: The Battle of Vathapi Book 1 is a fast-paced first book in the series. The story is set around 641 CE when the actual battle of Vathapi took place. The book is full of entertainment, love, war, emotions, friendship, loyalty, and love for the motherland above life and loved ones.

The grand description of roads, cities, villages, people, forests, and houses makes this book very fascinating and can transfer the reader to ancient times.

The inbuilt Indian emotions like friendship, love for motherland, respect for parents and elders, helping fellow humans and monks, and treating guests like God are nicely woven into the plot while writing this historical fiction that has the charm to attract contemporary fiction lovers too.

The romance was built naturally which takes its time to bloom. The author had wonderfully crafted all the characters, especially the three heroes: Elango, Muthuvel, and Kannan.

I liked the two female characters, Sanghamitra and Indumati. I believe they are very essential for the plot. The character of Sanghamitra proves that women in ancient times too were smart and intelligent and could bravely take revenge on the people who destroyed their loved ones.

While reading this story I felt like I was watching each and everything in my imagination. The vivid descriptions of the palaces, temples, roads, guest houses, and humans were so nicely written that I could imagine them in my brain.

The spy system that was mentioned in the story is very interesting and it seems that the author had read lots of historical fiction and nonfiction books before writing this book.

This is a well-written book and is the fruit of extensive research done by the author. Although there are so many characters, I never got confused because the author mentioned all the characters and their connection with the kings at the start of the book.

The book flows at a good pace and different twists and turns kept me hooked with this historical fiction read. I love everything about the book and eagerly waiting for the second part. There are a few double words in some places that is the only problem otherwise it’s a great read for historical fiction lovers.

If you love reading historical fiction then I will highly recommend you to read Nandis Charge by Arun Krishnan.
